When This Is Over

about

Running down the end of the calendar, everything is broken. Defective. Calamitous. Did we bring it on ourselves, calamity? The dystopia of the present, nothing foretold in Ridley Scott celluloid. No one rocketed free of earthly gravity bound for the off world colonies, fortune, and adventure. Only folded up inside their homes. Locking the doors for the summer, now the winter. No more visitors. Hours are over, come back next year.

The new normal is all lowered expectations, isolation, distrust, concern. Mask, secured? Can I convey a stubborn good attitude by crinkling my eyes just so? Did I wash my hands dutifully before entering and after leaving? Did you? I didn't time you. Singing the nursery rhyme in my head while scrubbing. "Wash, wash, wash your hands." We're all reduced to children. Diminutive, helpless. Can't help yourself, you certainly can't help others. Not from six feet or more away. Children don't have that kind of reach.

Maybe that's why a glimmer of hope feels so overwhelming. Because we're all now so small in our self regard. Any scraps will do. New year, glad tidings, comfort and joy. Either would be enough. Hold on, just hold on.
