about

I don't usually go into process, but this was an interesting learning piece for me. I really wanted to try out a vocoder synth, and since I'd been working up some "doomy" sorts of pads and sounds for a bit, I experimented with combining them here. I used a lot of analog sources but I also used some ugly digital crushing and other tricks to keep the sound from getting too soft.

I'm kind of proud of the "murder of crows" at the end, constructed from a set of samples of solitary birds flapping their wings. I snipped them up, pitched them down, and added them to a generative engine that would randomize the sample choice, fine tuning, and position, and then modulate the density of instances with a controller (to scale up the "size" of the flock). It was a good learning experience and fun to throw that at the end -- like all that's left after the apocalypse are the carrion crows, picking over the dead meat. Cheery!

Listen on good headphones for best results, and don't be afraid to turn it up a bit -- this recording features a higher than average dynamic range.
